December 2024 marked the inauguration of a new Hospital Boat in Manaus (Brazilian Amazon). The “Pope Saint John XXIII” now serves as the third vessel in the fleet. Measuring 62 meters in length with four floors, it offers 10 beds and a nursing station. The boat features dental and ophthalmological offices plus surgical rooms. It performs laboratory tests, X-rays, ultrasound and mammography.

This Hospital Boat holds enormous importance for the region. For many people, it represents the only access to specialized medical care.

The Order of Malta actively participates in this project. Bishop of Óbidos/Pará, Dom Bernardo Johannes Bahlmann, conceived and enabled the initiative. Dom Bernardo serves as Conventual Chaplain ad honorem of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Knight Eládio Gomes Canto collaborated in the development. Minister Mauro Luiz Campbell Marques, member of Cruz de Malta of Brasília, provided fundamental support.

The arrival of this new vessel marks a new era for the project. The mission focuses on staying close and caring for people. It brings health and hope to riverside communities.
